The reorganization of Central Plantation Crops Research Institute since 1970 is shown below:

1970 Establishment of CPCRI (Kerala) under ICAR by merging the erstwhile Central Coconut  Research Station (Kasaragod), Central Coconut Research Station (Kayangulam), Central Arecanut Research Station (Vittal) and its five Sub stations at Palode and Kannara (Kerala), Hirehalli (Karnataka), Mohitnagar (West Bengal) and Kahikuchi (Assam) to improve the productivity of coconut, arecanut, oil palm, cocoa, cashewnut and spices.
1971 Research on Cashew and Spices was initiated with the establishment of All India Co-ordinated Spices and Cashewnut improvement Project
1972 Establishment of Seed Farm at Kidu (Karnataka) to produce quality planting materials in coconut, arecanut and cocoa; seed garden for cashew at Shanthigodu (Karnataka)
1974 Acquired the Research Centre at Appangala (Karnataka) for cardamom research
1975
  • Establishment of Regional station for research on spices at Calicut (Kerala)
  • Establishment of Field station at Irinjalakuda (Kerala) to monitor the northward spread of     coconut root(wilt) disease
  • Initiation of research on oil palm at Palode (Kerala)
  • Taking over administrative control of ICAR Research Complex at Goa and Lakshadweep Islands
1986 Delinking of research on spices and cashew for establishment of National Research Centres at Calicut and Puttur respectively
1989 Delinking of ICAR Research Complex  at Goa for upgrading as an independent Institute
1998 Establishment of International Coconut Gene Bank at Kidu
1999 Delinking of research on Oil palm to establish National Research Centre for Oil palm at Pedavegi (Andhra Pradesh)
2001 Delinking of World Coconut Germplasm Centre at Andamans and handed over to CARI
2002 Upgradation of Seed Farm at Kidu as Research Centre and delinking of Research Centre at Hirehalli and handed over to IIHR, Bangalore
